A Social Security number unlocks access to work, taxes, banking, credit, and various public benefits. Apply correctly, and your card will arrive by mail soon after approval. Begin the process online, then visit a local Social Security office with the original documents required to prove your age, identity, citizenship, or current lawful work status.

Applicants age twelve or older generally complete the application in person. Noncitizens who are authorized to work can apply after receiving work authorization. Some immigrants receive a number automatically through the immigrant visa process called Enumeration at Entry. Use the document checklist to choose acceptable proofs before your appointment, then complete Form SS 5 if needed.

Keep the number private and store the card safely. This is the cleanest path to payroll, banking, and services that steady life in your new community.
