WISE ROADS TO DRASTICALLY CUT OILFIELD DELAYS AND DISRUPTIONS

Article by Kacie Kostelecky

In a significant step toward improving operations in North Dakota's oilfields, an innovative Weather Information System, called Weather Information System to Effectively Reduce Oilfield Delays and Disruptions, or WISE ROADS, is making a difference thanks to the support they’ve received from WDEA, NDLTAP, and theIndustrial Commission.

“Before WISE ROADS’ involvement, only four weather stations existed in the oilpatch counties. Now, fifty new weather stations have been installed, proving this program is a game-changer for oilfield operations across the state.” Stated CurtGlasoe, PE/PLS, Technical Support Rep. for NDSU-LTAP.

A primary challenge in the oilfields of North Dakota is the unpredictable weather conditions. Harsh winters, severe storms, and rapid temperature fluctuations often lead to unexpected disruptions and costly delays in drilling and production operations. The WeatherInformation System could be the answer.

According to WDEA, the project developers, the system provides more accurate weather information to county road managers, to minimize the need to impose weight restrictions when gravel roads get wet.

“The road probes give temperature and moisture conditions at 2’ intervals in the roadbed down to 6’ below the road surface.” Glasoe continues,

“It gives road managers data to better manage the road usage in the oil patches of western ND.”

It provides oilfield operators with personalized alerts to make informed decisions in real-time, ensuring worker safety and equipment protection.

As North Dakota's oil industry evolves, innovative solutions like WISE ROADS could be a catalyst for further economic growth and energy sector development in the region.
